Virtual Animal Anatomy: LMS Integration Guide

Step 1: Register the Tool

   Open Manage Extensibility

   Log in to D2L Brightspace as an Administrator. Open the gear menu (top right) and click Manage Extensibility.

   Start Registration

   Click the LTI Advantage tab, then click Register Tool. Choose Standard and click Register.

   Fill in the Tool Fields

   Enter a name of your choice. Fill in the following required fields exactly:

   Domain: https://www.cvmbs.colostate.edu/vaa5/Index
   Redirect URL: https://www.cvmbs.colostate.edu/vaa5/Index
   OpenID Connect URL: https://www.cvmbs.colostate.edu/vaa5/Login
   Keyset URL: https://www.cvmbs.colostate.edu/vaa5/jwks
   

   Extensions and roles can remain unchecked. Click Register.

   Save Registration Details

   A Brightspace Registration Details pop-up will appear. Copy and save this data. You'll need it shortly. Then click View Deployments.

Step 2: Deploy the Tool

   Create New Deployment

   Click New Deployment. Under Tool, select the name of the tool you just registered.

   Configure Settings

   Under Security Settings, leave User Information, Org Unit Information, and Link Information all unchecked. Virtual Animal Anatomy does not require any of this data. Under Configuration Settings, check Open as External Resource. Under Make tool available to, add the appropriate org units for your institution.

   Save Deployment ID & Contact Us

   Click Create Deployment. A popup will show your Deployment ID. Send this ID together with the Registration Details from Step 4 to us via email to complete the LTI 1.3 process.

   Create a Launch Link

   From the deployments screen, choose View Links → New Link. Set the URL to https://www.cvmbs.colostate.edu/vaa5/Index, set the type to Basic Launch, then save and close. This step is required to make Virtual Animal Anatomy available to add to a course.

   Create a Developer Key

   In Canvas, navigate to Admin → Developer Keys and create a new LTI key. Use the fields below. Keep the privacy level set to Private. Virtual Animal Anatomy does not need student information.

   No LTI Advantage services adjustments are needed. The default settings are fine.

   Send Us Your Details

   After creating the developer key, email us with the following:

   Required Information

   Canvas Host URL

   e.g., yourinstitution.instructure.com

   Client ID

   From your developer key

   Deployment ID

   From the app deployment

   Open in New Tab

   When adding Virtual Animal Anatomy to a course module for testing, always select "Load in a new tab." Opening it inline will produce an error.

   Add as External Tool

   Follow the Canvas external tool setup video to add Virtual Animal Anatomy. If the blue +App button is not visible, your LMS administrator must complete this step.

   Privacy & Credentials

   Privacy settings can remain Anonymous. The tool only requires a key and a secret. No student data is collected.

   Set Launch URL & Open in New Tab

   Launch URL: https://www.cvmbs.colostate.edu/vca4

   When adding to a module, select "Load in a new tab" (as shown at minute 1 in the setup video). This is required. The program will show an error if not opened in its own window.

   Add as External Tool

   Follow the Moodle external tool documentation. Video guides are available for earlier Moodle versions and Moodle 4.4. At many institutions, your LMS administrator must do this.

   Keep privacy settings Anonymous. Virtual Animal Anatomy only requires the key and a secret. No user data is collected or sent.

   Add the External Tool

   Follow Blackboard's LTI documentation. The provider domain is cvmbs.colostate.edu. The default settings are fine. You'll only need to provide the consumer key, shared secret, and Launch URL.

   Privacy & Tool Type

   Under Send User Data, select Never. Virtual Animal Anatomy collects no user data. Set the tool type to Course Content Tool and leave Allows Grading unchecked.

   Select "New Window" when installing. This is required. The program will show an error if not opened in its own window. Also, place Virtual Animal Anatomy outside of a Learning Module in the course content area. Some users have reported that Blackboard doesn't respect the "New Window" option when a tool is inside a learning module.
